Jacob and Prodigal Son

Jacob and Prodigal Son
Epilogue of Jacob’s Story

Luke 15:11-32

1.    Jacob
During August, I have preached on the Jacob’s Story as an example of our spiritual journey. When I was in a middle school, one teacher said that “life is Waltz.” As you know, Waltz is music of three bits.
He said, “as Waltz has three bits, our life story has 3 stages.”

Here are the 3 stages in the Jacob’s story: hometown, foreign land and coming back home.

At his home, Jacob was like a child. Everything was sufficient and provided.
He was favored by his mom and protected by his father. But once he left his home, he faced reality. He struggled to survive in a foreign land. He worked hard, had his own family and became more responsible. On the way back home, he had a near death crisis but it became a chance to meet God.
When Jacob came back home, Jacob was not the same person as when he had left home 20 years before. He came back as a successful and matured person.

Jacob’s story is not an uncommon story. It is one of several life styles.
There are many Jacobs in this world. They left their parents’ home, built up their successful career and had own family, and came back to their hometowns.
The main emphasis of Jacob’s story is at Bethel and Jobbok river. The story emphasizes that we need to begin our journey with God, and come back with God. As we build our successful career, we also have to build up our relationship with God.
As a surgeon, when Mary Neal built up her career, she recognized that career was not everything. She needed some space for God in her life so that God actually intervened to protect her in the case of crisis. She went to heaven and came back home because she made a space for God in her life.
Jacob was blessed by God, because he made a space for God in his life.
Brothers and sisters!
Invite God into your life. Set a time aside for God, and pray and listen to His voice. Remember Wednesday 9am to pray for the church, church members and also for me. We need each other’s prayers.

2.    Prodigal Son
Now, here is another version of Jacob’s story in the New Testament. He is called a prodigal son. Prodigal son is one of the most famous bible stories. When youth groups have a summer retreat, they always play a skit with the prodigal son. The storyline is pretty simple as Jacob’s: hometown, foreign land, and coming back home.

There are two sons. Guess, who is leaving home?
It is the second son, because he does not have a birthright. So he asked his father for his portion. Since his father was still alive his request for his portion was disrespectful to his father. But his father was generous and gave him his portion, and the second son left home.
In the foreign land, he spent all of his money in entertainment and with prostitutes. He became homeless. He fed pigs for his living and even ate pig’s food to satisfy his hunger. Then, he thought that it must be better to be a servant at his father’s house rather than being hungry in a foreign land.
He came back home, asked his father for forgiveness and took him as a servant. His father was so glad that he came back alive that he gave him new clothes, restored his state as a son and offered a banquet. It is a happy ending.
While Jacob came back as a successful man, the prodigal son came back as a looser. Jacob was responsible, but the prodigal son was irresponsible.
But after leaving home and spending time in a foreign land, they each learned the something. They needed God. Jacob asked God father for protection and blessing at the Jobbok river and the prodigal son asked his father for forgiveness.

We may succeed in our life as Jacob or we may fail our life as the prodigal son, but the most important thing is that we should recognize God in our life.
Henri Nouwen, a famous priest, said “I am the prodigal son every time I search for unconditional love where it cannot be found.”
Like the prodigal son, we all want unconditional love where we can be accepted as who we are. But the place is not in a foreign land, but it is at our father’s house.

When the prodigal son lived with his father, he didn’t recognize his father’s love. They just lived together. When he left home and experienced pain, loneliness, hunger and anxiety, he learned how important his father was to him.
And when he came back home, he was forgiven and accepted by his father.

Even though the prodigal son made many mistakes, and wasted all his money, at least he learned something from his mistakes. So when he came back home, he could have a much better relationship with His Father.

We all make mistakes at some points in our lives. But we are Christians, who learn from our mistakes and grow from the learning. God does not punish us because we made mistakes, but God really worries about us when we do not learn anything from our mistakes.
When we learn from our mistakes, when we return to God, we are forgiven and we will have a new life again.
3.    A Hidden Character
As we read, verse 11-24 is about the prodigal son’s story, and it concludes with a happy ending for the second son. But this is not the end of the whole story. There is a hidden character, the first son. His story is in verse 25-32.

The first son came back from his work in the field and found that there was a banquet for the second son. His younger brother wasted all of his portions, but his father forgave him, accepted him and threw a feast for him. He got upset and complained to his father.

We kind of understand the feeling of the first son. He always stayed with his father and worked for him while the second son spent all his money with prostitutes. The first son complained that his father never held a banquet for him with his friends but he does for the second son. It seems his claim is legitimate.
But we also know that there is no love in his heart. The first son definitely cared more for his portion rather than for his younger brother.

When the second son wasted all of his money and came back home, his father accepted him, but it does not mean that he will have another portion again. Since he received his portion, there would be no more inheritance from his father. But the emphasis in the story is about relationship. The second son was forgiven and accepted by his father.

In the beginning of the story, the first son might want to leave his home instead of the second son. But he could not. He was the first son. He would inherit his father’s estate. If he left his father, he had to give up his birthright. He didn’t have a choice but stayed home, was obedient to his father and waited until he would inherit all of his father’s estate.
Therefore, the first son’s relationship with his father was superficial. The relationship was not developed. Where there is no crisis, a relationship does not develop. Then, a crisis came when the second son came back. The first son worried if the second son took his father’s estate again. When he felt his portion was threatened, he began complaining to his father.
He expressed his jealousy and anger to his father. He might not be thoughtful or matured. But at least he became honest to his father about his feeling. Father came to him and said, “Oh! My son! You are always with me, and all I have is yours. But your brother was dead and is alive again. Isn’t it right to celebrate his life?”(vv.31-32)

As you can see this picture, the father and the second son are reconciled. And now, the father asks his first son to join the celebration. The story ends here and we do not know how the first son responded. It is an open end story.

I was born in a Christian family and attended the church service all the time in my life. I was always in the church with God, but I did not feel God closely.
Then, when I saw new members coming to church and experienced God’s grace I became jealous. I was always with God, but I had never experienced such grace. I was not happy about it until I became a pastor.
When I became a pastor I could understand our heavenly father, and I realized that the true first son is not the one who inherits father’s estate but is the one who inherits our father’s heart.

Brothers and Sisters!

The Kingdom of God is for those who understand heavenly Father’s heart, and inherit His compassion.

This Pastor Has Guts

THIS PASTOR HAS GUTS

This interesting prayer was given in Kansas, USA, at the opening session of their Senate. It seems prayer still upsets some people.

When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard:

"Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says: "Woe to those who call evil good", but that is exactly what we have done.

* We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values.

* We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it Pluralism.

* We have worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism.

* We have endorsed perversion and called it alternative lifestyle.

* We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.

* We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.

* We have killed our unborn and called it choice.

* We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable.

* We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem.

* We have abused power and called it politics.

* We have embezzled public funds and called it essential expenses.

* We have insitutionalised bribery and called it sweets of office.

* We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition.

We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression.

* We have ridiculed the time-honored values
of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.

Search us, Oh GOD, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Aamen!"

The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in protest.

In 6 short weeks, Central Christian Church, where Rev. Wright is pastor, logged more than 5,000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively. The church is now receiving international requests for copies of this prayer from India, Africa and Korea.

With the LORD'S help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and WHOLEHEARTEDLY become our desire so that we again can be called "ONE NATION UNDER GOD."

Think about this: If you forward this prayer to everyone on your list, in less than 30 days it would be heard by the world. How many people on your list will not receive this prayer.....do you have the boldness to pass it on?

I HAVE, AND I HAVE JUST SHOWN IT BY FORWARDING THIS TO YOU. GO ON  FORWARD IT!!!

To All Mothers

To All Mothers

Who in silence love someone
from first sight to first fight.
The mother who watch like a hawk,
not even a fly touch my skin,
while I was sleeping,
Mother is ready to swat any
who dares to get close to me.

Remain Grateful No Matter

A King had a male servant who in all situations and circumstances would always tell him ‘my king, do not be discouraged because everything God does is perfect, no mistakes’.
Remain Grateful No Matter The Situation
One day, they went hunting and a wild animal attacked the king, the servant managed to kill the animal but couldn't prevent his majesty from losing a finger.
Remain Grateful No Matter The Situation
Furious and without showing gratitude, the King yelled at him and questioned God’s goodness towards him.
The servant replied; despite all these things, I can only tell you that ‘God is good and everything He does is perfect; He is never wrong’.
Remain Grateful No Matter The Situation
Outraged by the response, the king ordered that the servant be arrested and locked up.
Later, he left for another hunt and was captured by savages who use humans for sacrifice.
In the altar, the savages found out that the king didn't have complete finger set; he was released because he was considered "not fit to be offered to their gods".
Remain Grateful No Matter The Situation
On his return to the palace, he ordered that the servant be released. When the servant resumed his duty, the king said; my friend, God was really good to me. I was almost killed but for lack of a single finger I was let go.
But I have a question; If God is so good, why did He allow me to put you in jail? The servant replied and said ‘My king, if I had gone with you, I would have been sacrificed because I have no missing fingers.  You see, everything God does is perfect, He is never wrong’.

Often we complain about life, and the negative things that happen to us, forgetting that nothing is random, and that everything has a purpose. God knows why he chose you to receive this message today, please bless someone with it by sharing it. Everything happens for a reason, but God wields his power over all of them.
In all situations and circumstances of life, appreciate God both for the good and the bad. Comment and share if you acknowledge that Good is Great!

Cheers!

Prayers For Strength

Give Me Strength, Lord
Lord, you are Holy above all others, and all of the strength that I need is in your hands.
I am not asking, Lord, that you take this trial away. Instead, I simply ask that Your will be done in my life. Whatever that means, that is what I want.
But I admit that it's hard, Lord.
Sometimes I feel like I can’t go on. The pain and the fear are too much for me, and I know that I don’t have the strength on my own to get through this.
I know that I can come to you, Jesus, and that you will hear my prayer. I know that it is not your intent to bring me to this point just to leave me in the wilderness alone.
Please, Lord, give me the strength that I need to face today. don't have to worry about tomorrow.
If you just give me the strength that I need today that is all I need.
Keep me from sinning during this trial. Instead, help me to keep my eyes on you. You are the Holy Lord, and all of my hope rests in you.
Thank you for hearing my prayer.
In Jesus' name. Amen.
.
For Strength and Wisdom

Thank you, Lord, for being there for me and allowing me to cry out to you in my times of need.
It is amazing to me that the Lord of the Universe would take time to listen to me and to care about what I say.
God, there are things happening around me right now that I do not understand. Some of these things make me feel weak, helpless and afraid.
Even in the midst of this, I know that you are the Lord.
I know that the situation is in Your hand, and I trust You.
I beseech you for strength and for wisdom that I would be able to endure this situation and be able to handle it in a way that would bring glory to Your name.
In Jesus name. Amen.

Prayer for Overcoming Life's Hardships
O Lord, we call upon You in our time of sorrow, That You give us the strength and will to bear our heavy burdens, until we can again feel the warmth and love of Your divine compassion. Be mindful of us and have mercy on us while we struggle to comprehend life's hardships.
Keep us ever in Your watch, til we can walk again with light hearts and renewed spirits.

Strength for a Friend
Lord, I come before you today knowing that all power is in Your hand. I know that you are the Lord and that you care for your people. Right now, my friend is struggling with a difficult trial. I can see her strength is faltering, Lord, and know that you have all of the strength that she needs.
I pray that you will reach down and touch her right now wherever she is at this moment. Let your presence fill the room where she is and let her feel an extra portion of your strength that can help her to get through this day.
She needs you now, Lord, and I thank you in advance for meeting her where she is and shoring up her strength during this difficult time.
In Jesus' name. Amen.

Prayers for Strength and Courage
Say these prayers when you're in need of strength and courage. Day to day troubles are no match for the power of the Lord.

To be Grateful
Lord God, may we be grateful for our lot, and compassionate toward all those who are suffering every kind of distress at this difficult time.
May we hold back nothing, and hasten to be the ministers of prayer and mercy, like the disciples of Him who went about doing good in times of need. Amen

Prayer for Guidance and Help
Dear Lord, I am calling upon you today for your divine guidance and help. I am in crisis and need a supporting hand to keep me on the right and just path.
My heart is troubled but I will strive to keep it set on you, as your infinite wisdom will show me the right way to a just and right resolution. Thank you for hearing my prayer and for staying by my side.
Amen!

Ain't No Rock Gonna Shout For Me Lyrics

Ain't No Rock Gonna Shout For Me
J.Paul Williams (based on Luke 19:38-40)

Here comes the Lord ridin' on donkey with people waving branches on callin' him "King".
Here comes the Lord ridin' through Jerusalem.
If the people don't shout, the rocks will cry out!
Rocks, keep silent! Jesus comes to set me free.
Rocks keep silent! I'm gonna shout in victory!
Rocks, keep silent! Jesus reigns in majesty.
Ain't no rock gonna shout for me.

Here comes the Lord us thousands throng to see him.
Children stand on tiptoe to see the king.
Here comes the Lord, excitement in the air.
If the people don't shout, The rocks will cry!
Oh, yes, the rocks will cry out!
Rocks, keep silent! Jesus comes to set me free.
Rocks keep silent! I'm gonna shout in victory!
Rocks keep silent! Jesus reigns in Majesty.
Ain't no Rock gonna shout for me.

Rocks, keep silent! Ain't no rock gonna shout for me.
Rocks, keep silent! Ain't no rock gonna shout for me.
Here comes the Lord; hosannas feel the air.
The people bow and worship the promised king!
Here comes the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!
If the people don't shout, the rocks will cry out!
Rocks, keep silent! Jesus comes to set me free.
Rocks, keep silent! I'm going to shout in victory!
Rocks, keep silent! Jesus reigns in majesty.
Ain't no rock gonna shout for me.
Ain't no rock gonna shout for me.
Ain't no rock gonna shout for me.

Dancing With God

Trinity 1-3, Purpose of Men
Isaiah 43:18-21, Romans 12:1-2

Why Were You Born?

Genesis begins with the creation story. It says that God is the Creator of everything and human beings are created by God. We need to remember it in order to build a right relationship with God. Why is that?

When I went to college, one of the first classes I took was ‘Systematic Theology.’ The professor had his PhD degree in Germany, and he told us to read the German Philosopher, Martin Heidegger’s book, “Being and Time.’
It is Heidegger’s major book that profoundly influenced 20th century philosophy, particularly existentialism, hermeneutics and deconstruction. The book was not easy to read, especially for a college freshman. Most of the students read the book and wrote 5 pages book review without understanding the book. But I still remember one thing that the book said, “We are beings thrown into the world.” In other words, we were born to this world without our choice.

Is it true or is it not true? We didn’t intend to be born but our births were given. In the Christian world, we did not create ourselves but we are created by God. According to Heidegger, most people live as if they were born by themselves until they face death. Once they recognize that they could not avoid death, they feel anxious and question themselves, “Why am I here?” “What is the meaning of my life in this world?

Heidegger said that we exist only within a limited time and we cannot control our being and time. The only thing that we can do is to seek the meaning of our existence so that we can be free from anxiety. Our life is a journey to seek the meaning of our being in this world.

The Purpose Of Men

If we exist by ourselves, then we can find the meaning of our existence in ourselves. But since we are created by God, the reason of our existence is not from us but from God, the Creator. Let’s say that I built a table. Then, people do not ask the table, “Hey! What is purpose of your existence?” Rather than asking the table, People would ask me why I made the table. I know the purpose of the table because I made it.

It is the same that since God created us; the purpose of our existence should come from God. God knows the purpose of human beings, and God said the reasons in the Bible. There are two reasons for creating human beings.

First, God created us to take care of His creation. Genesis 1:26 says, “Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” (NRSV)

This verse suggests that humanity is the image of God in the dominion over the rest of creation. God created the heavens and the earth, fish, flowers, animals and God said it was good. Then God created human beings to have dominion over His creation. Hebrew word for ‘Have Dominion’ is rada. It means "care giving and nurturing" but not exploitation. God asked us to take care of His creation. So, God gave us dominion over the creation in behalf of God, and therefore we represent God to His creation.

Second, God created us to praise His glory. Isaiah 43:18-21 talks about God’s new creation. Since God’s creation was corrupted by human sins, God declared that He would renew his creation and said at verse 21, “the people whom I formed for myself so that they might declare my praise.”

Isaiah said that God created human beings that they may praise God’s glory.
‘Praise God!’ is our reason to exist.

Therefore, the last psalm, Psalm 150 ends with praising God’s greatness.
1 Praise the LORD! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty firmament!
2 Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his surpassing greatness!
3 Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp!
4 Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe!
5 Praise him with clanging cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
6 Let everything that breathes praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!

Verse 6 says that it is not only human beings but all of God’s creation should praise God. All creatures are made to praise God’s greatness. It is interesting to compare the first reason with the second reason.
When God told us to have dominion over His creation, we take care of all of His creation in behalf of God. When we praise God, we praise His name in behalf of all of His creation.

On one hand, we represent God to His creation, and on the other hand we represent His creation to God. So, we are the mediator between God and His creation: we take care of His creation and we worship God.
Third, God created us to be a blessing. During the Bible study, we studied on Genesis and we learned about God’s promise to save His people. In order to save his people God called Abraham and said “you shall be a blessing.” (Gen. 12:2) Page

All of the Bible stories are about God’s saving efforts through the people He called. God called Judges, Prophets and Priests to save His people. God sent His beloved son Jesus to save His people. God called disciples, deacons, elders, missionaries and Christians to save His people. All of God’s calling is about saving His people and blessing them.

In the Old Testament, God said ‘you shall be a blessing,’ and in the New Testament, Jesus said, “you are the salt and the light of the world.”(Matt.5:13-14)

Either way, it is the same that God calls us to be part of His salvation plan for the world.

Dancing With God

‘Destiny’ is another word for ‘the purpose of men.’ Louis Savary is a Jesuit professor in Spirituality. He said “our destiny is where God’s mystery and our mystery intersect.” Destiny, goal or mission of our life is not fixed but it was like dancing with God. It is well expressed in “the Creation of Adam”, a fresco painting by Michelangelo. This is part of the Sistine Chapel's ceiling, painted in 1512.

There are many paintings of the creation of Adam, but the uniqueness of this painting is that God and Adam stretch out their hands for the creation. This painting indicates that God created us not like a robot that moves as programmed, not like animals that live by instincts, but according to His own image and invited us to join His ongoing creation. God created us to be His partner by His grace, and called us to reflect His glory in this world. That is our destiny, the meaning of our life in this world.

I like this story that happened in a college. At the end of a semester, a college professor asked if there were any questions.

A student held up his hand and said half-jokingly, “Sir! I have a question. What is the meaning of life?”
Everyone laughed. They knew it was an impossible question and that the student was teasing. But the professor, well into his seventies, didn’t laugh. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small mirror.

Then the professor said, “When I was a small child, during the war, we were very poor and we lived in a remote village. One day, on the road, I found scattered broken pieces of a huge mirror on the ground.
I tried to find all the pieces and put them together, but it was impossible, there's probably a million little pieces, so I kept only the largest piece.

By scratching it on a stone, I made it round. I began to play with it as a toy. And I became fascinated by the fact that I could reflect light into dark places where the sun would never shine…

As I became a man, I grew to understand that this was not just a child’s game but a metaphor for what I might do with my life. I came to understand that I am not the light or the source of light. But light, like truth, true understanding or knowledge is there, and it will only shine in many dark places if I reflect it.”

Christians are like the mirror. We are not light, but we can reflect God’s light.
We are not a blessing, but we can reflect God’s blessing to people.

When we take care of God’s creation, when we love people and when we worship God, we can reflect God’s love and grace.

Let’s remember that we are made wonderfully and beautifully so that we can reflect God’s love and grace in this world.
